Description

Producing for Playwrights (Fall 2021) (Online)

Sept. 20 - Nov. 1
6:00pm - 9:00pm Central Time

Instructor: Jacob Janssen

Making work and getting work produced are two very different propositions. In this class we will explore the path from page to stage, and how to navigate it, so that your next project can be the success you want. The feeling of a project coming together is like no other, and playwrights are at their best when empowered to be their own best advocates when working with producers or institutions. This class will help writers clearly see the landscape on which they are working, and to provide playwrights with the tools to better navigate relationships in the world of self producing.

Jacob Janssen is a director and producer. Jacob has served in administrative positions at several theatres including Studio Theatre, Shakespeare Theatre and Mosaic Theater in Washington, DC as well as American Theatre Company in Chicago. Jacob’s work as a director has included projects with Baltimore Center Stage, Studio Theatre, Woolly Mammoth, The Goodman, About Face, and others. He is particularly interested in international collaboration. This interest lead to the development of projects with The Goethe Institute, Instituto de Cervantes, the Embassies of Austria, Brazil, Germany, Spain, and Switzerland. Jacob was the Artistic Director of The Plimoth Players, the Original Practice Shakespeare company resident at Plimoth Plantation, in Plymouth, MA.  He holds an MFA in Directing from The Theatre School at DePaul University and a BFA in Acting from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Classes will be held via Zoom. Instructors will send out Zoom invites one day before class begins. We encourage students to setup a Zoom account for themselves before class if they have not already to ensure when class begins you are able to jump straight into the art!
